Most builders focus on building new homes, so renovating is typically a part-time activity for such tradespeople. We are dedicated to providing a great experience to our renovation/addition customers. We bring the same attention to detail, superb design, integrity, craftsmanship, and customer service that we are known for in new home construction.
For many years I turned down most requests for us to do renovation projects. Not that we couldn’t do them and, for that matter, not that we didn’t want to do that kind of work. The fact of the matter is that I knew that, unless a builder has people who are dedicated specifically to renovations and additions, he cannot do a good job for both his renovation clients and his new home clients. I did take some renovations and additions, but usually only those that would be predictable and follow a predictable new home building process. The processes and services required for building a new home and renovating a home are very similar and quite specific. The difference is that when building a new home, once the plans have been finalized, the building process is relatively straight forward and predictable. With a renovation, however, flexibility is often required from renovation companies to respond to unexpected issues that arise. This unpredictability requires a different mindset from a different kind of supervisor, as well as subcontractors who are prepared for dealing with these uncertainties. The unexpected surprises of renovation are a problem for a production-minded, new home supervisor who is process-oriented and has his plate full with multiple projects. That is why we have a full time, dedicated Renovation Specialist who plans, oversees, and troubleshoots our renovation, remodeling and addition projects. For a Renovation Specialist, dealing with the unexpected is merely a part of the process.
